New York Trip: Saratoga and New York City Photography

Although we've lived in North Carolina for 20 years, we have many roots in the northeast and I always enjoy getting up there - especially at this time of year.

With our son Sean getting ready to head off to college, I figured this would be a good time for us to take a trip together. Sean loves New York City, so I dropped him off with his sister Alison for a few days as I headed further north to Saratoga Springs.

It was great to see Alison and her boyfriend Mike, and I got the extra bonus of seeing my brother and sister and their families.

I first photographed the racing in Saratoga in the mid-90s and I've wanted to go back for some time. Thanks to my brother Ben for helping me get credentials and then getting up at 5 a.m. to go to the track with me. (We got to play a little golf too).

It was so nice seeing everyone but I wish Betsy could have made the trip.

We also wanted to congratulate Alison on her new job in New York - we are very proud and happy for you!

Charlotte Photography: Celebration of Spring

It's been a long, tough winter around these parts and the arrival of some fantastic spring weather seems to have lifted everyone's spirits.

I had the opportunity to get out a bit over the last few days to capture some of the beautiful spring scenes around Charlotte.

Personal Photography: New York City Scenes

We had a big change of pace this year as our family headed to New York City to celebrate Christmas.

I hope everyone had a joyful holiday. We had a great time spending time together and doing some exploring around the city.

I wanted to share a few images I snapped along the way.

Here's to a great 2010!

Merry Christmas!

An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the Angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about." So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.

Luke 2:9-16

We wish all of our friends and clients a very Merry Christmas.

May your holiday season filled with hope, peace and joy.

Music Photography: Larry McCray in the House of Blues

My family is blessed to attend Lake Forest Church, which has a creative staff that works to make messages innovative and relevant.

Music plays a vital role in our worship and the annual series Hope in a House of Blues brings in amazing artists to perform with our band.

Through a bit of luck and a connection with Lake Forest guitarist JB Eanes, the church brought in bluesman Larry McCray for an inspiring performance.

McCray has toured with such notables as The Allman Brothers, Buddy Guy and BB King, and his performance did not disappoint.

Redemption Song: Mike Farris at Lake Forest Church

Mike Farris' song is one of redemption.

Farris performed Sunday at our family's church home, Lake Forest Church in Huntersville, as part of a series titled "Hope in a House of Blues."

Nearly dead from an accidental overdose of pills and alcohol before he turned 21, Farris moved in with his father.  He recalls “I taught myself how to play the guitar, and I started writing songs, songs that were healing me.”

Farris continued to write and eventually formed the Screamin' Cheetah Wheelies, which had had some success including a rock radio hit. He also got to tour with acts such as ZZ Top, the Allman Brothers Band and Sheryl Crow among others. But he continued to struggle with drug and alcohol dependency.

The addictions continued to dominate his life even as he spent time with Double Trouble, the rhythm section of the late guitar legend Stevie Ray Vaughn.

After having an epiphany at a relative's  funeral, Farris became sober again with the help of his family and church. He now combines original songs with turn-of-the-century Gospel songs.

Having seen Farris at Lake Forest last year, I was glad I got the chance to take some pictures and once again hear his amazing voice.

Lake Forest Church lead pastor Mike Moses is heading up the Hope in the House of Blues series with musical leadership from worship director Kyle Dillard. The series runs through Nov. 1, when blues artist Larry McCray performs.

Farris' albums include Salvation in Lights, Goodnight Sun and Shout! Live.

Farris, in his his original song, "The Lonely Road", sings:

I was so blind
Till I saw your glory
The day you saved me from my fire
Will always be
The best part of my story
I ain't ever going back
to where I was before
No, I ain't ever going back - to the lonely road,
The lonely road can't lead me anymore.
