Ballet Photography: Charlotte Ballet's Little Mermaid

Charlotte Ballet's current offering dives into the underwater world of the Hans Christian Andersen tale of the Little Mermaid.

With choreography from Mark Diamond and new sets and costumes, the show shines both under the sea and on dry land.

Alessandra James (who alternates performances with Sarah Hayes Harkins) swimmingly brings the mermaid to life in this colorful, fun show.

Ballet Photography: Charlotte Ballet's Innovative Works

Charlotte Ballet's Innovative Works never fails to disappoint with a great variety of work performed in the intimate setting at the Patricia McBride and Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux Center For Dance.

This year's offering includes Ballad Unto by acclaimed choreographer Dwight Rhoden, Omologia from former North Carolina Dance Theatre dancer and now choreographer David Ingram, YAMATO, earth/nature/drum by choreographer Mark Diamond and Sketches From Grace by Sasha Janes. And four different Dancer Spotlights, with choreography by current Charlotte Ballet dancers, are rotated during the numerous performances.

The up-close setting at Charlotte Ballet's headquarters allows the audience a unique perspective and wonderful lighting design by Jennifer Propst brings drama to the pieces.

Ballet Photography: Charlotte Ballet's Nutcracker

While the story and Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux's wonderful choreography remain the same, there are many new faces in this year's edition of Charlotte Ballet's Nutcracker.

There will be numerous performances through late December so be sure to take in a show if you get the chance.

Charlotte Ballet: Innovative Works 2015

Charlotte Ballet's Innovative Works provides an ecclectic mix of contemporary dance and ballet in the intimate setting of the Patricia McBride and Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux Center for Dance.

This year's offering includes pieces from Mark Diamond, David Ingram, Sasha Janes and Dwight Rhoden.

Another nice aspect of the show it that it has a longer run, with performances through the end of February.

Ballet Photography: Charlotte Ballet's Nutcracker

These have been some heady times for Charlotte Ballet, fresh from the Kennedy Center Honors last weekend where dancers and staff were on hand for a tribute to artistic director Patricia McBride and fellow honorees Sting, Tom Hanks, Lily Tomlin and Al Green.

This is a well-deserved honor and a once-in-a-lifetime experience for those involved, including the dancers who got to perform for McBride, President Barack Obama and the many dignitaries and entertainers in attendance.

But it was time to get back to work with the annual performances of The Nutcracker, with numerous shows throughout the holidays.

To see more images from the performance, click here.

Congratulations to this talented group and happy holidays to all!

Ballet Photography: Charlotte Ballet's The Four Temperaments and Dangerous Liaisons

Charlotte Ballet got its season off to a sizzling start with a mix of traditional and modern.

George Balanchine's classical The Four Temperaments showcased the dancer's precision and form. And Balanchine muse and soon-to-be Kennedy Center honoree Patricia McBride is an incredible resource for the company.

Things turned to the modern and musical with Sasha Janes' Dangerous Liaisons, which mixes dance, fencing and set design with an original score from popular cellist Ben Sollee, who performs the music live suspended above the stage.

Ballet Photography: Charlotte Ballet's Othello

North Carolina Dance Theatre has transitioned to Charlotte Ballet and this talented troupe kicked off its shiny new self with Dwight Rhoden's Othello, an impressive melding of high-gloss stage production, music and, of course, incredible dancing.

And in this time of transition, I decided to change things up a bit and you will be able to find the gallery here.

Congratulations again to the new Charlotte Ballet!

Ballet Photography: Jiri Kylian's Forgotten Land

It was an exciting night as the former North Carolina Dance Theatre (NCDT) became Charlotte Ballet and the group got to perform a work by acclaimed choreographer Jiri Kylian for the first time.

The main performance was Othello by Dwight Rhoden, but both were so visual that I decided to break them into two posts. (Those images will follow soon.)

The new name comes with new branding and the website is set to launch on Monday.

Congratulations Charlotte Ballet!

Ballet Photography: NCDT's Cinderella

Cinderella, North Carolina Dance Theatre's current offering, allows this dynamic company to show off its collective talents in a major production.

On top of the always amazing dancing, add in wonderful production values with beautiful costumes by A. Christina Giannini, set design by Alain Vaes and original lighting by Nate McGaha. And they all come together with the help of the talented production team led by Edna Mae Berkey. And of course the choreography and leadership of Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux.

This is a visually gorgeous production that incorporates humor along with elegance and grace.

The show runs through March 16th at the Knight Theater.
